Fire Safety
The smoke chamber is the funnel-shaped area between the damper and the flue. In most Allen homes, it was built with rough, stepped (corbeled) bricks that trap creosote, restrict airflow, and create fire hazards. Smoke chamber parging smooths those walls with a heat-resistant coating, improving draft and reducing creosote buildup. Call (972) 521-7225.

They trap creosote. Smoke slows down and swirls around the ledges, depositing creosote on every rough surface. A smooth smoke chamber lets smoke flow straight up. A rough one acts like a creosote collection system — building up dangerous deposits faster than the flue itself.
They restrict draft. The turbulence created by stepped walls disrupts the smooth upward flow of smoke. This can cause smoke to spill into the living room, especially when the fire is first lit. After parging, homeowners often notice the fireplace draws noticeably better.
We check the smoke chamber during every chimney inspection. Most Allen homes built before 2000 have rough, unparged smoke chambers. It’s one of the most impactful upgrades you can make. Not sure yours needs repair? Start with smoke chamber cleaning. If smoke still spills into the room, we also offer chimney downdraft repair.
$800–$2,000 depending on the size of the smoke chamber and the extent of damage. This includes chimney sweep, surface prep, ChamberTech 2000 application, and camera verification. We provide exact pricing after inspecting your smoke chamber.
ChamberTech 2000 is rated for 20+ years. It’s a UL-listed, high-temperature refractory material designed to withstand the heat cycling inside a smoke chamber. Once applied, it doesn’t need reapplication under normal use conditions.
NFPA 211 states that smoke chambers should have smooth interior surfaces. Many older homes were built before this standard was enforced. While it’s not always required for existing homes, it is the current safety standard and significantly reduces fire risk.
If the smoking is caused by turbulence in a rough smoke chamber, parging will fix it. If smoking is caused by other issues (wrong flue size, negative air pressure, blocked damper), those need separate attention. We diagnose the root cause during inspection.
