Chimney Masonry
& Tuckpointing In Allen, TX

Tuckpointing is the process of removing deteriorated mortar from between the bricks and replacing it with fresh mortar. It’s the most common chimney repair we do in Allen — and the most important one to catch early. Mortar joints are the weakest point on any chimney, and once they start failing, water damage follows fast. Call (972) 521-7225 for a free estimate.

Why It Matters

Why Mortar Joints Fail and What Happens Next

Mortar joints are designed to last 25–30 years. But Allen’s climate — triple-digit summers followed by hard freezes — puts exceptional stress on mortar. The constant expansion and contraction cycle opens micro-cracks that let water in. Water freezes, expands, opens the cracks further. This is why Allen chimneys often need tuckpointing sooner than chimneys in milder climates.
When mortar fails, the bricks lose the seal between them. Water infiltrates the chimney wall, travels downward, damages the flue, rusts the damper, stains the firebox, and eventually compromises the chimney’s structural integrity. A chimney with severely deteriorated mortar can actually start leaning as the mortar gaps widen.

Tuckpointing done on time ($250–$800) prevents thousands in chimney rebuild costs. It’s one of the highest-ROI home maintenance tasks you can do. We color-match the new mortar to your existing joints so the repair is invisible.

How Tuckpointing Works

Assess

We climb to the roof, inspect all mortar joints, and document which areas need repair. Photos and written assessment before quoting.

Grind Out

Old, deteriorated mortar is ground out to a depth of ¾ inch minimum using a specialized grinder. This ensures the new mortar bonds properly.

Fill & Tool

Fresh mortar is pressed into the joints and tooled to match the original joint profile. Color-matched to blend invisibly with existing work.

Cure & Seal

Mortar cures for 24–48 hours. We recommend pairing with waterproofing to protect the new joints.

Signs Your Chimney Needs Tuckpointing

If the mortar is failing in multiple areas, we recommend a full repointing of the chimney rather than spot repairs. Full repointing costs more upfront but lasts 25–30 years and prevents recurring repair visits.

Tuckpointing Questions

How much does chimney tuckpointing cost?

Spot tuckpointing (localized areas): $250–$800. Full repointing of the entire chimney above the roofline: $800–$2,500 depending on chimney size. We provide exact pricing after roof-level inspection with photos showing exactly which areas need repair.

Properly done tuckpointing with the correct mortar type lasts 25–30 years. Adding waterproofing sealant after the mortar cures extends the lifespan even further by preventing water absorption into the new joints.

They’re often used interchangeably. Technically, repointing is removing and replacing mortar joints. Tuckpointing is a specific technique using two colors of mortar to create the illusion of very thin joints on old brickwork. In practice, most chimney work in Allen is repointing — we remove the old mortar, pack in new, and tool it to match.

It’s physically possible, but we don’t recommend it. Using the wrong mortar type can damage the bricks (Type S is too hard for some older bricks). Improper joint depth means the new mortar pops out within a year. And you’re working at height on a roof. Professional tuckpointing costs less than you’d think and lasts decades.
