A Level 2 chimney inspection uses specialized video cameras to inspect the entire length of the flue liner, joints, and smoke chamber. It is required by NFPA 211 standards for all real estate transactions, when changing fuel types (e.g. wood to gas), or after a chimney fire or storm event. We provide detailed reports with photos. A Level 1 visual check (included with our standard chimney inspections) only covers easily accessible elements like the firebox, hearth, exterior masonry, and cap. While it is perfect for annual maintenance, it cannot see inside the dark, winding curves of your flue pipe.
Level 2 video camera inspections range from $250 to $450 depending on whether it is a single-flue or multi-flue chimney and ease of access. This cost includes the video run, on-site diagnostics, and a comprehensive written PDF report with photo captures.
Most general home inspectors only perform a Level 1 visual check from the fireplace opening. They do not carry specialized chimney video cameras or hold professional chimney sweeps certifications. When they suspect an issue, their reports explicitly recommend hiring a CSIA-certified chimney sweep for a Level 2 camera inspection.
We deliver the complete written report via email within 24 to 48 hours of the inspection. If you are facing a tight real estate option period closing date, please inform us when scheduling so we can prioritize and expedite the report delivery.
